Ember Elk by mattwatier Ember Elk by mattwatier
This art is part of a collection children's fairy tales "The Secret Magicks of Maine."

You can buy the book at Xlibris. Or learn more about the book at my website .

I liked the painting so much that I thought you might like to see it larger. This painting can be found embedded in the page layout called Keepers of the Blue.

True Event
In the mid coast area of Maine during the spring we burn the blueberry fields. Maine Blueberry's grow on a short shrub no taller they 8 inches. So on some given days you will see columns of smoke coming off of the hilltops.

The mythical creature that answers event.

Ember Elk. In a part of there mating ritual the males put on fire displays catching the hilltops a blaze.

hmm...there is a book titled: "the smoke jumper" and in the book there is a photographer and he captures a photo of an elk burning just like this one here. you should look into it and read it, you'd probably like it. anyhow, this reminded me of the book!

why burn the blueberry shrubs? they seem to do ok by themselves here in finland, more rot in the forests than can ever be collected

mostly because the blueberries need the nutrients added back into the soil. the soil on the hills is on top of rock and it barely gets thicker then 3 inches. So the burn adds back to the soil quicker. I think that is the reason.

ayuh- that could well be- finland is so heavily forested that theres plenty of chaff ( dead leaves ) to go around i spose
